Shanghai Volkswagen's final sales performance review for 2012 has finally been released. Shanghai VW sold just over 1.28 million vehicles in 2012, representing positive year-on-year growth of 9.8 percent and marking a new record for the joint venture. The JV's sales in the month of December totaled 122,644 units.
Toyota has set its Chinese sales target for 2013 at 900,000 vehicles, The figure is a full ten percent lower than the one million sales target it set, but failed to achieve, last year. Toyota managed to sell just 840,000 vehicles in the country last year, far less than expectations and falling 14 percent of its one million sales goal. The lackluster performance was due mainly to rising tensions following the Diaoyu Island incident, which saw sales of Japanese goods in China fall to record lows. Commenting on the manufacturer's performance, China Toyota representatives said that the 90,000 vehicles it sold in December represent a "relatively normal" sales level. Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën sold a total of 440,000 vehicles in 2012, Xinhua reported . The figure represents year-on-year sales growth of 8.88 percent for the joint venture. 2012 marks the second year Dongfeng Peugeot's annual sales exceeded 400,000 units. The joint venture sold 223,800 Citroëns and 216,200 Peugeots. Dongfeng Peugeot is looking to begin selling the turbocharged 1.6 L engine powered Citroën C4L in China this year. The JV's first SUV, the Peugeot 3008 , will also make its Chinese market debut.
